Airbus Helicopters made first flight with SAF
Airbus H225 made the first ever flight using 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in June 2022. SAF was used for both Safran Makila 2 engines. This flight proceeded the November flight of Airbus H225 helicopter with the single engine using the same type of fuel and both are parts of Airbus’s testing program aimed to study SAF’s effect at helicopters systems.
The testing program is expected to proceed next year involving other types of helicopters with different engines architecture. Airbus Helicopters aims to certify 100% SAF for Airbus airplanes and helicopters before 2030. Their goal is to cut CO2 emissions in half before 2030. All the Airbus airplanes are currently certified to fly using 50% SAF blend with fossil fuel.
